CELEBRATION OF WORLD CLEAN UP DAY IN NYABUGOGO
Yesterday, 20 September 2026, the City of Kigali joined the rest of the world in commemorating the International Day dedicated to cleaning up our communities. The activity was held in Nyabugogo area of Kimisagara Sector, Nyarugenge District.
The Minister of Local Government, Habimana Dominique, together with the Mayor of the City of Kigali, Samuel Dusengiyumva; the District Executive Administrator of Nyarugenge, Ingangare Alexis; the Deputy District Executive Administrator, Uwamahoro Genevieve; and other leaders from various institutions joined residents of Kimisagara Sector in a community work activity focused on collecting litter, painting commercial buildings in Nyabugogo area, and carrying out other sanitation and hygiene activities.
The activities marking the World Day dedicated to cleaning up our communities were held under the theme: “Kigali Free from Litter.”
The Minister of Local Government commended residents for participating in cleaning activities in Nyabugogo commercial area and urged them to continue promoting hygiene and cleanliness in all other areas. He said: “Cleanliness is one of the characteristics of Kigali residents and Rwandans in general. We call upon residents to continue working with the authorities to maintain cleanliness in Kigali and throughout the country.”
He reminded residents of the City of Kigali of key practices they should observe to maintain cleanliness, including:
- Avoiding littering in public and other inappropriate places.
- Ensuring that households have proper systems for separating biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste.
- Entering into agreements with authorized waste collection service providers.
- Avoiding dumping waste at night, as this is prohibited.
- Maintaining cleanliness in workplaces and residential areas.
- Property owners of commercial buildings must ensure that their buildings have proper systems for collecting and managing waste generated from the premises and that these systems remain functional, including drainage systems, wastewater and sewage systems, designated waste disposal areas, and other related facilities.
He further stated: “We will not tolerate people who dump waste into drainage channels or rivers, nor those who fail to maintain the cleanliness of commercial buildings.” He urged residents to continue working with authorities by reporting such issues whenever they identify them so that they can be followed up and addressed.
