NYARUGENGE: 2026–2027 SCHOOL YEAR STARTS SUCCESSFULLY

The 2026–2027 school year officially started on 7 September 2026 in Nyarugenge District, with students demonstrating encouraging attendance on the first day of classes.

School administration and teachers were well prepared to welcome students from early morning, while parents were seen accompanying their children to school on the first day.

School Head teachers reported encouraging student attendance on the first day, with attendance reaching as high as 97% in some schools.

Rudakubana Ludovic, who accompanied his child to GS Kimisagara, said: β€œI was pleased to see that all the teachers were present at the school to welcome the children. It was clear that they were well prepared to begin their work.”

Private schools were also fully prepared for the start of the school year. Adrien Mushimiyimana, Head of Saint Nicolas School, said that all teachers reported for duty and that classes commenced immediately. He said: β€œFor everything to go smoothly, we greatly appreciate the Government and the education authorities for preparing us in advance, which enabled us to prepare accordingly. The result was that we started classes on time.”

Nyarugenge District has 122 schools, including 30 public schools, 15 government-subsidized schools operating under partnership agreements, and 77 private schools. These schools are categorized as follows:

  • Pre-primary schools
  • Primary schools
  • Secondary schools
  • Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) schools
