THE NATIONAL HARVEST DAY (UMUGANURA) CELEBRATED IN NYARUGENGE

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the Mayor of the City of Kigali, members of the Executive Organ of Nyarugenge District, security organs, and other leaders joined residents of Nyabugogo Cell, Kigali Sector, in celebrating Umuganura Day on 7 August 2026 under the theme: “Umuganura: A Source of Unity and a Foundation for Self-Reliance.”

Highlights of the 2026 Umuganura Celebrations:

• Intambwe y’Intore: A traditional procession performed by leaders and the City of Kigali’s Indatirwabahizi Cultural Troupe.
• Traditional dances and songs performed by the Indatirwabahizi Cultural Troupe.
• Presentation of achievements and planned activities: The Executive Administrator of Nyarugenge District, Mr. Ingangare Alexis, presented the District’s achievements and planned activities for the 2026–2027 fiscal year.
• Presentation of the City of Kigali’s achievements to residents through a documentary film.
• A discussion on the history of Umuganura, the dangers of illicit brew, and measures taken to protect the health of Rwandans, as well as citizens’ responsibilities in building a healthy population with improved well-being and sustainable development.
• A discussion and exchange of views on the topics presented.
• The Guest of Honour, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Nduhungirehe Olivier Jean Patrick, spoke about the theme of Umuganura—“A Source of Unity and a Foundation for Self-Reliance”—and highlighted the importance of Umuganura in present-day Rwanda. He urged participants to preserve Rwandan culture and avoid being influenced by foreign practices that do not uphold their dignity and values.The Minister also addressed issues discussed during the session, particularly alcohol abuse and illicit brew, and called upon parents to strengthen efforts to protect children from anything that may harm them. He urged parents to instill good values in their children and engage with them on a daily basis so that they grow up with proper upbringing, love for their country, and the capacity to continue building on and advancing the achievements already made.

The celebration also featured Umuganura sharing, where leaders and residents shared food together as part of the traditional celebration.
